On 20th May 2020 there is a Question & Answer session from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM that will be answered by Prof. Vinod Ganapathy.

Brief Introduction/ Abstract: This talk will describe the Meltdown attack that impacted Intel x86 processors in early 2018, and will touch upon the Spectre attack as well. These attacks were the first in a series of new attacks that have begun to plague the processor industry—namely, timing-channels that allow an attacker to infer secret information by just observing the time that a processor takes to complete a certain activity.

Target Audience: Anyone who has completed a basic undergraduate course on operating systems and computer organization.

Takeaway:

  1. Get an understanding of how covert timing-channel attacks work.
  2. Learn the methods used by covert timing-channel attacks.
  3. Understand basic defenses, where applicable.
